SOME GENEALOGIES OF EARLY BARBADIAN FAMILIES FROM ST. LUCY AND THE OTHER NORTHERN PARISHES

Seventeenth century genealogies of early families from the Northern/Leeward Parishes are probably the most difficult to construct because parochial records do not begin until well into the 18th century for these parishes. The work done by Joanne Mcree Sanders on will abstracts from 1639 to 1725 is the best secular record available that allows in some cases, genealogies of early Barbadian families to be constructed quickly without resorting to the actual wills themselves. Some families have explored their genealogies into the sixteenth centuries and have published their findings online giving the sources of their information. A few early family genealogies are explored and various maps of the island, including actual field maps are used to locate where families lived and confirm their existence. We can learn a great deal about early Barbados doing this exercise. I plan to share some of the insights and theories in this presentation.

QUANDARY GENEALOGY

I am Anne Powers, now a professional, independent genealogist and researcher, but once a child with muddy knees. I grew up in Scotland with a Scottish father and an English mother, and I now live in Derbyshire.

While I work mainly with British records it is also possible to track families who emigrated to North America and the then British Empire. I also have experience with records of British colonists in Jamaica.

As a result of discovering a previously unknown family connection with Jamaica I have researched a number of similar families, mainly with eighteenth century colonial connections to the island. You can read about this and some of the discoveries I have made on my associated website www.aparcelofribbons.co.uk.

WHAT DNA TEST SHOULD I TAKE FOR MY GENEALOGY? | FAMILY TREE MAGAZINE

Our collective understanding of genetics has evolved quite a bit in the past few decades. Thanks to advancements in DNA technology, we genealogists have more options than ever for uncovering our genetic ancestry. We enjoy both a wider variety of DNA tests that we can take, as well as a larger number of services that offer DNA testing.

Family historians can take advantage of three types of DNA tests. We’ll cover each in this article:

- Autosomal DNA (atDNA)

- Mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA)

- Y-chromosomal DNA (Y-DNA)

DE VARONA FAMILY GENEALOGY

This site is a collection, a living document as it were, of what our research has discovered or uncovered about Patti's de Varona emigrant ancestor and his more immediate descendants. We do not publish any more than we have to or are allowed to about the Still Living individuals that descend from the emigrant ancestor (who we usually refer to as "I.M." since it is short and distinguished). Some historical sketches are also contained herein, and several references. It is by no means complete. It may contain some speculation. But, in the main, it attempts to distinguish fact from fiction. We, totally, welcome involvement by family members and others in making corrections, additions, and any modifications to make it more palatable to you, the reader. It is our hope that family members can share this with their children and grandchildren to spread light on what may be an otherwise dim corner of their family's history.

GRENADA

ECHOES OF HER VOICE: RECLAIMING FAMILY, MEMORY, AND IDENTITY THROUGH ORAL HISTORY

My journey into oral history began with a sense of quiet desperation—a need to recover what was slipping away. Long before I trained as a researcher, I was a daughter listening to fragments of family stories passed down through generations. These stories, often incomplete, sometimes contradictory, were my inheritance.

The words of Simone Schwarz-Bart —’when an old person dies, a whole library disappears’—felt increasingly urgent as I watched my mother’s memory fade. Diagnosed with dementia at seventy-three, she began to forget the names, places, and relationships that once anchored her world. Her memory loss was not just a medical condition; it was a cultural and emotional unraveling. I realized that her stories, and those of so many others like her, were in danger of being lost if not captured in time.

The pictures are partly privately owned by the family, partly at the Royal Library, the National Museum and the Maritime Museum in Helsingør. Probably more places too.
