THE BAHAMAS

BAHAMAS VIRTUAL JEWISH HISTORY TOUR | THE VIRTUAL JEWISH WORLD

The small Jewish community in the Bahamas has origins dating to the 17th century. The British first settled the Bahamas in 1620; however, few Jews came to the live on the islands. Luis De Torres, who was the official interpreter for Christopher Columbus, is thought to be have been the first Jew and European to set foot in the New World when the Santa Maria landed at San Salvador in 1492. Torres was a Marrano, a “secret Jew,” who officially practiced Catholicism but was escaping the dangers of Europe during the Inquisition. He was fluent in Arabic, Hebrew, Chaldean, Spanish, Portuguese, French and Latin. Another Jew, Moses Franks, served as attorney general and chief justice of the islands in the 18th century. After World War I, a few Jewish families from Poland, Russia, and Britain settled in Nassau. Later Jews came to Freeport on Grand Bahama Island.

BARBADOS VIRTUAL JEWISH HISTORY TOUR | THE VIRTUAL JEWISH WORLD

The British first colonized Barbados in 1627. A year later, Spanish and Portuguese Jews, Marranos, arrived in Barbados from Dutch Brazil, Suriname, Germany and England. The British actively promoted Jewish settlement in Barbados during this time.

The majority of Jews that settled in the 17th century were of Sephardic origins. In 1654, the Jewish community in Bridgetown, the capital, was formally established and a Sephardic synagogue, K. K. Nidhei Israel (“The Dispersed Ones of Israel”), was consecrated.

BERMUDA

BERMUDA VIRTUAL JEWISH HISTORY TOUR | THE VIRTUAL JEWISH WORLD

Historically, few Jews moved to Bermuda because of the harsh policies of the English toward Jews on the island in the 18th century. There is one place on the island, Jews Bay, which proves Jewish origins in Bermuda. The name of the bay dates back to the early 1600s, and is considered to be named after a group of Jews who did business on the island. A Jewish congregation was formally established in the 20th century in the capital of Hamilton.

FIREBURN THE DOCUMENTARY TEASER

The bloody labor revolt of 1878, known as the Fireburn, is but one life-altering event that helped shape people’s lives, as well as the economy of the US Virgin Islands. It was a pivotal event in the history of the Virgin Islands, but what really happened? The Fireburn documentary explores the inhumane conditions that existed prior to the revolt and looks at the women who were called “Queens” due to their leadership.

I AM QUEEN MARY

I Am Queen Mary is a transnational public art project created by La Vaughn Belle of the US Virgin Islands and Jeannette Ehlers of Denmark-two artists connected by their shared Caribbean roots and colonial histories. Together they created the first collaborative sculpture to memorialize Denmark’s colonial impact in the Caribbean and those who fought against it. This monumental work debuted in March 2018 in front of the West Indian warehouse in Copenhagen in commemoration of the 100th anniversary of the sale and transfer of the Danish West Indies (now the U.S. Virgin Islands) to the United States. As the first monument to a Black woman in Denmark, I Am Queen Mary made international headlines as a symbol that celebrates and centers the story of people who resisted Danish colonialism in the Caribbean. In 2020 the Danish government granted permission to permanently install I Am Queen Mary in front of a former colonial warehouse in Copenhagen, acknowledging the work's shift from a temporary artwork to an important landmark in the city.

SLAVE WRECKS PROJECT | PIECES OF HISTORY

Episode six of the new season of Pieces of History takes us beneath the waves, where archaeology and history converge to uncover lost stories of the transatlantic slave trade. In this episode, we explore the groundbreaking work of the Slave Wrecks Project, an international effort to locate and study shipwrecks tied to the global slave trade.

Joining me is Dr. Steve Lubkemann, maritime archaeologist and one of the project’s founding members. We’ll delve into how the Slave Wrecks Project began, the cutting-edge methodologies used to find and analyse these wrecks, and what these discoveries reveal about the millions of lives affected by the slave trade. From underwater surveys to the challenges of working in politically and environmentally complex regions, this episode uncovers how archaeology is reshaping our understanding of one of history’s darkest chapters.

WINDMILLS OF ST. CROIX

While roaming about St. Croix, people wonder about the stone towers dotting the landscape. Many of these towers were windmills built for crushing sugar cane (why we use the word windmills, not sugar mills). Of the 150-160 windmills for crushing sugar cane ever built on St. Croix, 119 have been located. This website provides the location of each windmill, how each one appears on historic maps, and current photos. You can learn more about the selection of these photos and map snippets.

First settled by the French in 1604, French Guiana was captured several years later by Dutch authorities. Jews arrived in French Guiana by way of the Dutch West India Company. The Dutch relied on the Jewish settlers to carry out their plans and settle the newly claimed colony. Their objective was to attract Jewish farmers and merchants experienced in managing tropical products. On September 12, 1659, a group of Portuguese Jews first arrived in French Guiana from Brazil. The Company appointed David Nassy, a Brazilian refugee, patron of an exclusive Jewish settlement on the western side of the island of Cayenne, an area called Remire or Irmire.

GUADELOUPE VIRTUAL JEWISH HISTORY TOUR | THE VIRTUAL JEWISH WORLD

Jews were first recorded living in Guadeloupe in the late 14th century. In 1391, in a surge of anti-Jewish riots that began in Spain, the most of the Jews were murdered. The community, however, began to revive during the mid-15th century. In 1485, the local inquisitor, Nuño de Arévalo, forbid all Jews from living in Guadeloupe.

Prior to the expulsion of the Jews from Spain and Portugal in 1492, the Jewish community sold the land of the old cemetery to the local bishop. Many Jews were forced into converting to Christianity; the Conversos in Guadeloupe lived together in a specified street in the former Jewish quarter.

JAMAICA

JAMAICA VIRTUAL JEWISH HISTORY TOUR | THE VIRTUAL JEWISH WORLD

In 1494, a Marrano named Luis de Torres arrived on the island of Jamaica as the interpreter of Christopher Columbus. Jamaica was a Spanish colony from the arrival of Christopher Columbus in 1494 until the British conquest in 1655. Numerous Portuguese Jews first settled in Jamaica during the Spanish colonization. In 1530, the first shipload of Portuguese-Spanish Jews entered Jamaica. They settled in Spanish Town (formerly St. Jago de la Vega), the only operating town at that time. Many of the Jews that arrived were Conversos, fleeing Europe to openly practice Judaism.

MARTINIQUE VIRTUAL JEWISH HISTORY TOUR | THE VIRTUAL JEWISH WORLD

Jews began settling in commercial centers in Martinique in the early 17th century. Jewish merchants and traders arrived on the island, prior to the French colonization, along with the Dutch. One of France’s first colonies in the Caribbean was Martinique, on the eastern edge of the Caribbean Sea. France conquered Martinique in 1635 and, shortly after, a large Jewish settlement began to form on the island. The first synagogue was founded in 1667.

PUERTO RICO VIRTUAL JEWISH HISTORY TOUR | THE VIRTUAL JEWISH WORLD

Though officially forbidden from settling in Puerto Rico through much of its history, Jews managed to settle on the Island as secret Jews, also called marranos, conversos, or Crypto-Jews. Jewish immigration to Puerto Rico began in the 15th century, though the community could not flourish as Judaism was prohibited by the Spanish Inquisition and the first synagogue was not established until a few hundred years later.

VIRGIN ISLANDS VIRTUAL JEWISH HISTORY TOUR | THE VIRTUAL JEWISH WORLD

Jews first settled in the Virgin Islands in 1655 when it was ruled by Denmark. These were mainly traders in sugarcane, rum and Molasses. One of the first Jews in the Virgin Islands was Gabriel Milan, whom King Christian of Denmark sent in 1684 to be governor, the first of three Jews who have served as governors.

In 1685, the Jews and Catholics were granted freedom of religion and about two centuries later, in 1850, the Islands’ Jewish population hit its peak, numbering 400 and making up half of the white community.

The islands that make up the Caribbean nation of St. Kitts and Nevis, while extremely small, still have a rich Jewish history.

After being expelled from Brazil in the 17th century, Jews began to settle on this string of islands located about a third of the way from Puerto Rico and Trinidad and Tobago. At its height, the Jewish community in St. Kitts numbered between 75 to 100 people and constituted around 25% of the islands' total population.

These mostly Sephardic Jews brought to the island the secrets of crystallizing sugar, making Nevis the “Queen of the Caribbees.

The Jewish community of Suriname is one of the oldest in the Americas. During the Inquisition in Portugal and Spain around 1500, many Jews fled to Holland and the Dutch colonies to escape torture and condemnation to the stake. Those who were converted to the Catholic fate were called "Marranos." The stadtholder of the King of Portugal gave those who wanted to depart some time to settle their business and supplied them with 16 ships and safe-conduct to leave for Holland. The most prominent amongst them were Rabbi Izak Aboab and members of the Nassi, the Meza and the Pereira families.

TRINIDAD & TOBAGO VIRTUAL JEWISH HISTORY TOUR | THE VIRTUAL JEWISH WORLD

The first major Jewish immigration to the islands of Trinidad and Tobago occurred in the late 18th century. Then a second wave of Portuguese Jews arrived in the late 19th century, with a few also arriving from Curacao. Nevertheless, many of these Jews assimilated and intermarried with locals. By the beginning of the 20th century, only 31 practicing Jews remained on the island. One of the most recognized Jews was Sir Nathaniel Nathan who served as Associate Justice of the Trinidad Supreme Court from 1893 to 1900 and Chief Justice from 1900 to 1903.

VENEZUELA VIRTUAL JEWISH HISTORY TOUR | THE VIRTUAL JEWISH WORLD

The history of Venezuelan Jewry most likely began in the middle of the 17th century, when some records suggest that groups of marranos lived in Caracas and Maracaibo. Although many scholars say there is no evidence yet discovered to prove that a Jewish community existed in Venezuela as early as the 17th century, Venezuelan popular belief claims that groups of marranos went from Caracas to the city of Tucacas in 1693, and vanished without leaving behind any records. However, due to Venezuela’s geographic proximity to countries that did have organized Jewish communities, such as the Dutch colony of Curaçao, it can be assumed that Jews from Curaçao traveled to Venezuela to trade. After the disappearance of Jews from Tucacas, Jews did not begin to settle permanently in Venezuela again until the middle of the 19th century.
